The 1860 Navy Cutlass, adopted by the U.S. Navy in 1860, was inspired by the French M1833 design. This reproduction features a carbon steel blade with a brass basket-style handguard. The first model of this naval cutlass was produced by the Ames Company. It boasts a leather-wrapped handle that offers a comfortable grip, accented with decorative brass details and a polished brass pommel. The cutlass has a distinctive, upturned falchion blade with a single fuller—a groove along the blade that improves balance, not for draining blood as often mistakenly thought. The sword comes with a wooden scabbard, wrapped in leather and adorned with brass fittings. This type of cutlass was widely used during the Civil War.
